What Is Andi
Andi is an AI search engine from Andi Inc., backed by Y Combinator (Winter 2022) and founded by Angela Hoover and Jed White. It sets out to fix what a lot of people dislike about modern search: ads, SEO spam, and results that bury the answer under ten links. You type a question in plain English, and Andi replies like a knowledgeable friend, pulling from multiple sources and citing them so you can check the work yourself.
Under the hood, Andi runs its own web index called Trantora. Most rivals license someone else's index and bolt a chatbot on top. Andi doesn't. Trantora reads full page content and scores sources on meaning and credibility. The company says the index covers roughly 14 billion pages. In a September 2024 SearchBench evaluation, Andi reported an 87% accuracy score against 71% for Google. Treat vendor-run benchmarks with some caution, but the numbers are consistent with Andi's pitch: it leans on source quality instead of keyword matching.
The limits matter as much as the strengths. Andi is free, which is great, but it's run by a two-person team, and that shows in places. Its index is smaller than Google's, so very niche academic or breaking-news topics can come back thin. It's built for quick, conversational answers, not long multi-step research projects. No file upload. No focus modes. No deep-research agent like you'd get from Perplexity Pro. So for serious literature reviews, you'll probably reach for something heavier. Andi also doesn't log your searches, doesn't use cookies, and doesn't sell data, which is rare at this scale, but it does mean the business model is still unsettled: a paid Plus tier has been discussed since 2022 and still hasn't shipped.
