Search, categories, and the Community Feed handle discovery, and following creators shapes what you see. The variety is real, not a marketing line.

You can create a character from scratch, or start from an existing one and change it. The editor covers the name, avatar, tagline, description, greeting, and a definition field where you write the personality and background. Visibility is yours to choose, so a character can stay private or go public for anyone to find and chat with. Public characters can pick up a following. Creators often build a small audience around a single strong persona.

Memory is the feature that decides whether a long chat works or falls apart. Pinned memories let you lock specific details in place, a chat memory field holds a short summary, and Lorebooks store world and lore details that a character draws on as it writes. The top tier unlocks the full memory suite, including private Lorebooks. Free accounts get basic memory with 15 pins. That's enough for short sessions, but it runs out fast in a campaign.

Character Calls turn a chat into something closer to a phone call. You speak, the character speaks back, and the conversation is also saved as a text thread you can reread. The voice library includes voices made by other users and pre-made ones from the team, and you can create your own by recording or uploading an audio sample. Voice works on 1:1 chats, not group chats. It's free for all users.

Chat Styles change how a character writes rather than what it knows. Free users get basic styles, while the subscription unlocks premium ones like DeepSqueak and LongSqueak, the latter built for long-form roleplay with four times the memory of the standard styles. Style Control adds dials for reply length and whether the character leans toward dialogue or narration. It's a niche feature unless you're doing serious roleplay. Then it matters a lot.

Imagine generates images from the context of a chat, so a scene you just played out becomes a picture without writing a prompt. Comics goes further: it takes a recent conversation, turns it into a short story premise, and renders it as a multi-page comic in a style you pick, with the character staying recognizable across panels. Comics runs on the Charms virtual currency and is a premium experience. Character AI trains its own image models for these features. That shows in how consistent the results look.

When the platform is busy, free users can hit slow mode, where replies take longer to generate. Charms are an in-app currency you earn through quests like a daily login, creating a persona, or posting to the feed. You can spend them on extra image generations, skipping slow mode, or bypassing ads. They're tied to your account. They can't be transferred, and they can't be cashed out. Subscribers skip slow mode and ads outright.
