Arena AI is the rebranded home of LMSYS Chatbot Arena, a project started by researchers at UC Berkeley in 2023. The idea is simple. You type a prompt, two models answer anonymously, and you pick the better reply. Only after you vote does the platform reveal who wrote what.
That blind setup is the whole point. Model labs can game a fixed test set by training on the answers, but they can't game hundreds of thousands of live humans typing whatever they want. The result is an LLM leaderboard built on real preferences rather than a score sheet.
The company behind it, Arena Intelligence Inc., spun out as a business in 2025 and now runs across several categories, including text, image, code, search, and video. The main limit to keep in mind: Arena AI evaluates and routes models, it doesn't train its own. So the models you test are only as current as each lab's public release.
