About Copy.ai

What Is Copy.ai

Copy.ai started in 2020 as a simple AI copywriting tool, one of the first products built on OpenAI's GPT-3. Type in a product description, pick a template, and get back a handful of ad headlines or email subject lines in seconds. That version is gone. Since a March 2024 relaunch, Copy.ai sells itself as a GTM AI platform, and GTM here means go-to-market: everything a company does to find, win, and keep customers. Instead of pumping out one piece of content at a time, the platform aims to automate the whole process behind it.

The core idea is what the company calls GTM bloat, the pileup of disconnected tools and manual steps that slows revenue teams down. Copy.ai's answer is a single platform where research, content generation, and tool integrations live in one workflow. Marketing teams use it to produce SEO articles and campaign copy at volume. Sales teams research accounts and write personalized cold emails. Operations teams keep CRM records enriched and current. Copy.ai says it's trusted by 17 million users, but that figure counts everyone who has signed up, not active paying teams.

The catch is scale. Copy.ai isn't a cheap tool for a freelancer anymore. The old free tier is gone. The entry plan costs $29 a month and caps you at 5 seats, and the plans that open up real workflow automation start at $1,000 a month. In October 2025 the company was acquired by Fullcast, a revenue operations platform, and its workflow engine now also ships inside Fullcast's product suite as Fullcast Propel. Existing accounts and workflows kept running through the transition.

Getting Started

  1. Create an account at copy.ai with your work email, then pick an entry plan. There's no permanent free tier, so expect a subscription before you can use the platform in earnest.
  2. Set up your brand context. Upload tone samples and company documents to Brand Voice and the Infobase so generated content uses your actual products, positioning, and pricing instead of generic filler. Skip this and the output reads flat.
  3. Open a workflow (a saved sequence of AI steps) or start from Chat for quick, one-off writing tasks. Pick which model handles each step: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google models are all available.
  4. Connect the tools you already run, such as your CRM or a Slack channel, so a workflow can pull live data and hand its output to the right person for review.
  5. Review the draft, approve or edit it, and let the workflow publish or send. Workflow runs consume credits, so keep an eye on the "Credits used" panel for each run.

Key features

Workflow Builder

Workflows are sets of AI-powered actions stitched together to model a real process, like creating an account plan or writing an SEO article. You define a trigger, add research or generation steps, and connect tools so the workflow pulls live data and hands off finished output. Branching logic lets a workflow take different paths based on conditions, so high-value leads can follow a different sequence than standard ones. This is the piece that separates Copy.ai from a plain writing tool.

AI Agents

Agents go a step further than workflows. Instead of following a fixed sequence, they decide which steps to take based on what they find, while staying inside guardrails you set. Common uses include researching target accounts and drafting outreach, repurposing one article into several formats, and watching competitor activity for changes worth flagging. The tradeoff is predictability. The more freedom you give an agent, the more you should check its output early on.

Infobase and Brand Voice

The Infobase holds company-specific knowledge, such as product documentation, competitive intelligence, pricing, and messaging frameworks, and the AI references it when generating content. Brand Voice learns your tone from existing samples, and it handles multiple voices for different audience segments. Together they cut down on the generic phrasing that gives AI-written copy away. Some setup work is required before either pays off, since neither works well without decent source material.

Multi-Model Access

Copy.ai doesn't build its own language models. It routes tasks to models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, and paid users can choose which one handles a given task. In practice that means you're not locked to whichever model was newest when you signed up, and you can match a cheaper model to simple drafts and a stronger one to the work that needs it. Usage still counts against your credit allowance either way.

Chat

Chat is the lightweight entry point: a conversational workspace for quick writing tasks, brainstorming, and one-off drafts. It comes with unlimited words on every plan and access to the multi-model roster. For teams still working out where AI helps most, Chat is the cheapest way to find out before committing to workflows.

Tables

Tables give GTM teams one place to hold structured and unstructured data, from CRM exports to call notes, and then feed that data into workflows. The pitch is simple. Personalized outreach only works when the AI has real context about the account, and context usually lives scattered across half a dozen tools. Copy.ai keeps working without it, but the output gets noticeably more generic.

Integrations and API Access

The platform connects to more than 2,000 external tools, including native integrations with Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Google Sheets, Outreach, and Salesloft. Enterprise plans add API access and bulk workflow runs, which let developers trigger a workflow programmatically and register webhooks for events like a completed run. Want AI inside an existing product rather than a separate dashboard? The API is the route.

Enterprise Security

Copy.ai offers enterprise-grade security protocols, guided implementation, and designated support on its larger plans. Data protection matters when workflows are processing CRM records and prospect contact details, so the security posture is worth reviewing before you connect customer data. Exact compliance certifications vary by plan, and the company points buyers to its Trust Center for current details.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Workflow automation is the real differentiator. Chaining research, drafting, and handoff into one repeatable process saves more time than any single template.
  • Multi-model access means you can pick the best model per task instead of being tied to one vendor's roadmap.
  • Deep integration list, with native connections to major CRMs plus 2,000+ tools through Zapier, so workflows fit into existing stacks.
  • Heavy content production becomes feasible: one case study on the site cites a 300% improvement in catalog coverage.
  • Enterprise plans include guided implementation and onboarding help, which shortens the ramp for teams new to workflow automation.

Cons

  • No free plan. The $29/mo entry tier is a real spend for anyone who just wants to test the waters, and there's no word-limited free version to poke at.
  • The $1,000/mo starting price for workflow automation puts it out of reach for small teams and freelancers.
  • Workflow runs are billed in credits, and credit costs vary per run, which makes monthly spend harder to predict than a flat subscription.
  • Acquired by Fullcast in October 2025, so the product roadmap now follows a parent company's priorities rather than standing alone.
  • Agents can take unexpected paths within their guardrails, so outputs need review until you trust a given workflow.

Frequently asked questions

It's a go-to-market AI platform, which means it covers sales and marketing work rather than just writing. You can use it as a plain AI writing assistant for marketing teams, but the main draw is building workflows that research prospects, draft assets, and push results into your CRM automatically.

It suits developers and small teams who want multi-model access without juggling a dozen separate provider accounts, and it removes the usual billing headache that comes with testing several vendors. One key covers it all.
