What Is Claude
Claude is a family of large language models built by Anthropic, the AI safety company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers. The assistant launched on March 14, 2023, and has grown into a set of products under one name: a chatbot at claude.ai, a terminal-based coding tool called Claude Code, desktop apps, and an API developers can call from their own software. Text and image input work across the current models, and output is text.
The main draw is work that requires holding a lot of context. Current Claude models support a context window up to 1M tokens. That's enough for a large codebase, a long report, or a stack of PDFs in one session. Anthropic pitches Opus-tier models for software engineering, agents that run multi-step tasks, and spreadsheet or slide work. Need a second opinion on a contract? Help untangling someone else's code? That's the sort of thing people reach for Claude to do. It handles those tasks well.
The limits matter too. Usage caps apply on every plan. They reset on a rolling five-hour window. A heavy day means waiting or paying for extra credits. Claude isn't a search engine and doesn't browse unless you turn on the web search tool. As with any AI assistant, it can state wrong things with confidence. Verify anything that carries real consequences.
Getting Started
- Go to claude.ai and create an account with an email address or a Google sign-in. The Free plan covers everyday questions without a card.
- Pick a model in the interface. Opus is the strongest tier, Sonnet sits in the middle for speed and intelligence, and Haiku is the fastest and cheapest.
- Start a chat and describe the task. Attach files, or create and edit files with code execution if your plan includes it.
- For coding work, install Claude Code from a terminal or VS Code and let it read and edit a project directly.
- Developers who want to build on Claude can create an account in the Claude Console and call the API with a model ID such as claude-opus-5.

A context window up to 1M tokens
Claude's current models accept up to 1M tokens of input, a jump from the 200K window of earlier generations. In practice that means you can hand over a whole repository, a lengthy legal document, or a semester's worth of notes in one go. Larger context also changes how you prompt. Stop trimming. Include the source material and ask specific questions about it.
Claude Code for real repositories
Claude Code runs in a terminal or inside VS Code and works directly on the files in a project. It reads the code around a problem, plans changes, and applies them. That suits work spanning many files. Anthropic added agent teams so several Claude instances can split a task and work in parallel.
Adaptive thinking and effort controls
Newer models decide how much internal reasoning a request needs instead of applying the same depth everywhere. Developers can set effort levels to trade speed and cost against accuracy. On simple tasks the model moves fast; on hard ones it spends more thinking tokens, so you don't pay for overthinking on a short email.
Artifacts for files and apps
Artifacts open AI output in a side panel where you can see, edit, and build on it. Ask for a data table, a working HTML page, or a small app, and the result renders next to the conversation. Big difference. You iterate on something you can actually click instead of pasting code back and forth.
Web search and connectors
Claude can search the web and connect to outside tools like Google Drive through connectors. Answers can then draw on current information or your own files. Off by default.
Memory across conversations
Claude remembers details from past chats, such as how you like your summaries formatted or which project you're on. That carries across web, desktop, and mobile sessions. Projects add a shared workspace for related chats, and team plans let people share project files.
Claude pricing that scales with use
Anthropic sells Claude as a subscription for individuals and a metered API for developers who want to build Claude into their own products. Pro is $20 per month monthly, Max starts at $100, and Team runs $20 to $125 per seat depending on seat type. On the API, Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output, with Sonnet and Haiku priced lower for cheaper workloads. That range means you can start free, move to Pro for daily work, and only pay API rates when you're building something other people will use.
