What Is Prompt Golf
Prompt Golf turns prompt engineering into a sport. Instead of grading prompts by how polished they look, it grades them by efficiency: how few characters and how few messages you needed to hit a fixed target. The model is the opponent, and the target phrase is the hole you're trying to sink.
The game runs on Azure OpenAI, so you're playing against a real large language model rather than a lookup table. That's what makes the rounds genuinely hard. The AI doesn't always cooperate, and half the skill is learning where it resists. A player who understands how the model completes text will beat a player who just types a longer, clearer instruction.
The main limit is scope. Prompt Golf is a game first, so it isn't a full prompt-engineering course, and it won't test production prompts for you. As of the current course it ships with five rounds, and the operator says more are coming. Rounds, quotas, and models can change without notice, so don't build a workflow that depends on a specific round staying frozen.
Getting Started
- Open the Prompt Golf site and create an account with a display name and email address, or sign in if you've played before.
- Pick a round from the course map. Each one states its target, such as making the AI say "MANGO" or guess a movie from emoji.
- Type your prompt and send it. Watch the AI's response, then adjust your wording to close the gap.

Character and Message Scoring
Prompt Golf scores you on two things: one point for every character you use and ten points for every message you send. Lowest total wins. That ten-point message penalty is the twist. A single dense prompt usually beats a back-and-forth conversation. You end up thinking like a golfer picking a club, not a writer drafting an essay.
Five Course 1 Rounds
The opening course has five rounds, each with a different kind of target. Hello World asks the AI to say a phrase without you using those words. Emoji Pictionary has you make it guess the movie Titanic from emoji alone. The Ultimate Answer wants the exact string "42" and nothing else. The Sycophant and The Jailbreak push the model toward phrases it won't hand over on request. Each round teaches a different trick.
Real AI Opponent
Responses come from a live large language model backed by Azure OpenAI, not a scripted set of canned replies. The model can be wrong, stubborn, or unexpectedly literal. That unpredictability is the point. You can't memorize an answer key, because the same prompt won't always land the same way.
Public Leaderboard
Your display name, finished rounds, and scores show up on a public leaderboard, so you can see where you rank against other players. It turns each round into a race for the lowest score rather than a one-time puzzle, and it gives you a reason to replay a round you've already solved.
Shared Gameplay Transcripts
Players who have cleared the same round can view the matching gameplay transcripts. That means after you solve a round, you can see how someone else did it in fewer strokes, which is a fast way to learn a technique you'd have missed. It's a spoiler. So clear the round first if you want to solve it cold.
Free Browser Play
The whole game runs in the browser, no install and no app store download. You sign up with an email address and start playing, and the operator lists it as free. Analytics and reCAPTCHA run in the background, and you can block the analytics with a browser privacy setting if you'd rather.
