ChatGPT Ads reaches 89 countries, and advertising is now OpenAI's second growth curve
OpenAI announced on Wednesday, October 21 that ChatGPT Ads will expand to 26 new countries, taking total coverage to 89 markets. The ad platform launched a little over eight months ago, and per OpenAI's own figures, more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on it since.
The revenue story is the number that will get quoted in boardrooms. According to OpenAI, advertising revenue hit a $1 billion annualized run rate in August, up from $100 million in March. Whatever one thinks of run rates as a metric, that pace hasn't been seen in digital advertising since the early social platforms.
Where the expansion lands
The geography is deliberate. After Mexico and Brazil, the new round adds 14 Latin American countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru, plus new markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Nigeria, South Africa and Ukraine are among the names OpenAI listed.
Ads remain limited to Free and Go tier users. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free, which keeps the paid product clean while the free tier, the one carrying inference costs for hundreds of millions of users, picks up the commercial load. That structure is now familiar from search and social, and OpenAI is applying it almost without modification.
The trust pitch, delivered in parallel
Alongside the expansion, OpenAI published a post explaining how it built what it calls a native ad stack for user trust and relevance. The core commitments: ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from ChatGPT's answers, and don't influence what the model says. Those are the same promises search engines made two decades ago, and the comparison is the point. OpenAI wants advertising to feel like a feature of a mature platform, not an experiment bolted onto a chatbot.
The company says its goal is for ads to be useful when people are pursuing goals and making decisions, while working for businesses of every size. Skeptics will note that every ad platform makes that claim. The difference here is the interface: intent expressed in conversation is a different signal from a search box query, and no one has fully figured out what advertising looks like in that medium yet.
What it means for the market
ChatGPT's weekly audience now exceeds 1.2 billion people, and OpenAI has framed the ad business as a pillar alongside enterprise contracts, subscriptions and API revenue. For the digital advertising duopoly, the message is that a third major destination for ad budgets is taking shape, even if its share remains small. For OpenAI, the timing feeds into widely expected IPO preparations. Executives have signaled interest in a 2027 listing, but no date has been announced.
The next phase, per OpenAI, includes more ad formats, better measurement and additional buying options, plus new ways for brands to interact natively with users inside ChatGPT. The bet is that conversation becomes a place where commerce happens, not just where questions get answered. Eight months and 89 countries in, that bet is being placed at full speed.
