Claude is a family of large language models built by Anthropic, the AI safety company founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers. That's the sort of thing people reach for Claude to do. It handles those tasks well.
The limits matter too. Usage caps apply on every plan. They reset on a rolling five-hour window. A heavy day means waiting or paying for extra credits. Claude isn't a search engine and doesn't browse unless you turn on the web search tool. As with any AI assistant, it can state wrong things with confidence. Verify anything that carries real consequences.
Getting Started
- Go to claude.ai and create an account with an email address or a Google sign-in. The Free plan covers everyday questions without a card.
- Pick a model in the interface. Opus is the strongest tier, Sonnet sits in the middle for speed and intelligence, and Haiku is the fastest and cheapest.
- Start a chat and describe the task. Attach files, or create and edit files with code execution if your plan includes it.
- For coding work, install Claude Code from a terminal or VS Code and let it read and edit a project directly.
- Developers who want to build on Claude can create an account in the Claude Console and call the API with a model ID such as claude-opus-5.

Claude Code runs in a terminal or inside VS Code and works directly on the files in a project. It reads the code around a problem, plans changes, and applies them. That suits work spanning many files. Anthropic added agent teams so several Claude instances can split a task and work in parallel.
Adaptive thinking and effort controls
Newer models decide how much internal reasoning a request needs instead of applying the same depth everywhere. Developers can set effort levels to trade speed and cost against accuracy. Anthropic sells Claude as a subscription for individuals and a metered API for developers who want to build Claude into their own products. Pro is $20 per month monthly, Max starts at $100, and Team runs $20 to $125 per seat depending on seat type. On the API, Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output, with Sonnet and Haiku priced lower for cheaper workloads. That range means you can start free, move to Pro for daily work, and only pay API rates when you're building something other people will use.
