Clipdrop

InitML (acquired by Stability AI in 2023, then Jasper in 2024) · Image

Clipdrop is an AI photo editor that handles the fiddly parts of image work in a few clicks: cut out a subject, delete a stranger from the background, blow a low-res shot up to print size, or generate a new image from a text prompt. It runs in a browser, ships desktop apps with plugins for Photoshop and Figma, and covers a lot of what Photoshop users used to do by hand. The free tier is genuinely usable, but it caps you at roughly 20 to 50 operations per day depending on the tool.

About Clipdrop

What Is Clipdrop

Clipdrop is a collection of AI image tools built around a single idea: you shouldn't need to learn masking, layer workflows or selection brushes to fix a photo. Upload a picture, pick a tool, get a result. Background removal, object cleanup, upscaling, relighting, text removal and background replacement all live behind the same simple interface.

The suite came out of InitML, a company founded in 2020 by Cyril Diagne, Jonathan Blanchet and Damien Henry. InitML joined Y Combinator's 2021 winter batch, was acquired by Stability AI in February 2023, then sold to Jasper in February 2024. Clipdrop now sits alongside Jasper's other image products, and the API documentation points developers toward Jasper's platform.

Where it fits: freelancers and marketers who need clean product shots and social-ready images without paying for a full Adobe subscription. The main limitation is depth. Clipdrop does a handful of tasks very well and doesn't try to be a complete editing environment, so anything involving precise manual retouching still needs another program. There's no mobile app either. If you want to edit on a phone, you're using the browser.

Getting Started

  1. Go to clipdrop.co and pick a tool from the toolbar. No account is needed for the free tier, but signing in keeps your history.
  2. Upload a photo drag-and-drop style, then wait a few seconds while the model processes it.
  3. For removal tasks, brush over the object or subject you want gone. For upscaling, choose 2x or 4x. For generated images, type a text prompt.
  4. Hit download to get your file. Free results come back at standard resolution. Paid accounts get high-resolution output.
  5. Optional: install the desktop app to get Clipdrop plugins inside Photoshop, Figma, Chrome and other work tools, so you don't have to leave your current editor.

Key features

Background Removal

This is the tool Clipdrop built its reputation on, and it shows. Upload a photo and the model isolates the main subject, hair and transparency included. No selection brush required. The free tier returns standard-resolution cutouts. Pro unlocks high-resolution output and a higher daily ceiling. For product photos and portrait work, the accuracy here is why this is the one most people try first.

Cleanup

Cleanup is an inpainting tool, which means it reconstructs the background underneath whatever you delete. You brush over the target, whether that's a passerby, a power line, a blemish or a logo. It works best on textured surfaces like grass, pavement or sky. On flat, structured backgrounds such as tiled walls, you'll sometimes see where the fill was stitched.

Image Upscaler

The image upscaler enlarges a picture by 2x or 4x while reducing noise and pulling back detail that compression smeared away. It's the practical fix for a photo that's too small to print or too soft to use as a hero image. Free accounts are limited to 2x at 20 images per day. Paid accounts get 4x and higher resolution, and the API documentation mentions up to 16x for enterprise use.

Text to Image

Clipdrop's text to image generator is built on a Stable Diffusion implementation tuned for speed. That tradeoff is worth knowing about: it returns results faster than most consumer generators, but fine detail and prompt adherence lag behind the bigger names. Treat it as a fast drafting tool for mockups and concept images rather than a final-art pipeline.

AI Background Replacement and Relight

Replace Background combines background removal with generative filling. You send an image plus a text prompt, and the subject lands in a new scene. Relight is the quieter feature in this pair, and arguably the more useful one for product work: it changes the lighting direction and color on an existing photo so mismatched shots look like they came from the same session.

Universal Resizer and Uncrop

The Universal Resizer takes any image and outputs any size or format, with presets for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and TikTok. Uncrop does the inverse of cropping: it extends the canvas and generates the missing edges, which saves an image that was shot too tight or needs a wider banner treatment.

Clipdrop Plugins and Desktop Apps

Clipdrop ships desktop apps for Windows and macOS plus plugins for Photoshop, Figma, Chrome and other common tools. The Photoshop plugin is the standout, since it lets you run background removal and cleanup inside a document you're already editing instead of bouncing files between browser tabs.

Developer API

Every major tool is available as a REST endpoint: remove background, upscale, cleanup, remove text, uncrop, replace background and text to image. Pricing is usage-based rather than a flat subscription, and Jasper's API platform is the current home for the documentation.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Background removal is accurate enough that small product and portrait jobs often need no manual touch-up afterward.
  • The free tier covers real work at 20 to 50 operations per day. No account required to start.
  • Clipdrop plugins for Photoshop, Figma and Chrome keep your existing workflow intact.
  • Every headline tool has an API endpoint, so the same models fit into automated pipelines.
  • One subscription replaces several narrow single-purpose web tools.

Cons

  • It's a collection of focused tools, not a full editor. No layers, masks, curves or precise manual retouching.
  • No mobile app for Android or iOS, so editing on a phone means using the browser.
  • The daily caps on the free tier bite during batch work. Processing 100 product images means multiple days or upgrading.
  • The text to image generator prioritizes speed over detail. It trails dedicated image models on complex prompts.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Free accounts get text to image, uncrop and replace background with no count cap, plus 20 per 24 hours on background removal, 2x upscaling, cleanup, relight and text remover. Replace background allows 50 per 24 hours. Paid accounts raise these to 1,000 per 24 hours per tool and add high-resolution output.
